When does the movie Sin City take place?

Honestly I'm terrible at nailing the setting in movies unless they come out and say it, and the way its put together and the clothes they wear along with the way they talk (Marv calling girls "dames") screams like 40's 50's but I could be totally off..any help would be appreciated.
