Is the Depo Povera shot really bad as people say?

I'm on the shot. I have gotten it three times. The first time I got it but then I stopped. Then I got it again and this is the second time in a row that I get it. I'm almost 19 and I have heard that it takes woment to get pregnant years after getting off the depo shot. Also, that it causes infertility. It really worries me because having kids is really important to me. How were you guys experience off getting of the shot and trying to conceive? I'm going to college in a few months so I obviously don't want to get pregnant. But I do plan on having kids after I graduate college.
