Can't play Ab on guitar, can you help?

I can't do the barring, it's too difficult for me and my fingers hurt. is there an alternate way for beginners?

If you really are a beginner, then why are you trying to play Ab? Stick to basic "beginner" chords until you get used to playing.

they have some chords that are close but you just have to keep at it and work those fingers out

You might need to adjust the action on your guitar, or better yet, get a better one (there's always room for one more guitar....).

You need to keep at it and learn how to use bar chords. They are important Power Chords, as you will find out later, and indispensable in some situations.

First thing - make sure your guitar is "set up" - adjusted - properly. If the strings are too high that will make it impossible for a beginner to learn barre chords. You may need to take it to a guitar shop to get done. You might also try a lighter gauge of string for now. Those will be easier to play.

The "cheater" way to play Ab would be to play just the top 4 strings - Like an "F" chord only at the 4th fret instead of the 1st. You'll still need to do a little "barre" with your first finger on the E and B strings.

When you do your barre chords, make sure your thumb is on the back of the neck, not wrapped around it. that changes the position of your hand so you can play the barre on the side of your first finger instead of more flat. You want to use the bony edge of your finger, not the flat fleshy part of it.

Hope that helps
