Pay starts at about $45,000 a year and goes up to about $80,000. They make much more if they own their own hospital and employ other veterinarians.

You need an bachelor's degree before you can enter veterinary school. Your state university is fine. You may choose any major. You must take the pre-vet classes which are listed on veterinary school websites.

There are 28 veterinary schools in the US. Admission is very competitive. Most applicants apply to at least twelve veterinary schools in their senior year of university. Fewer than two in seven applicants are admitted.

Almost all veterinarians do surgery. Spaying and neutering are the most common operations. You would have to do surgery in veterinary school and it would be very difficult to work as a veterinarian without doing surgery unless you worked in animal and meat inspection in a slaughter house.

Each degree takes four years for a total of eight years.
