Decorating question--what kind of furniture do we need in living room and dining room?

We need way more storage in our living room and dining room. Part of what we need to store is books. I would also like to have more surfaces on which to place things and also places to store extra serving ware, platters, etc. Besides for a simple open bookshelf, would there be some longer, lower pieces you could recommend? We like modern/Ikea style.

Also, most of our current furniture is black. Would it look good to mix in white bookshelves when a lot of the other furniture is black? Or would it seem like it doesn't match.
When I said surfaces on which to place things, I meant decorative items. Thx!
