Sally's salary at the end of a year is $26,780. This reflects a 4% salart increase in Feburary and then a 3% cost-of-living adjustment in June. What was her salary at the beginning of the year?

1.03(1.04x) = june pay = 1.0712x
x + 1.04x *4 + 1.0712x*7 = 26780
x + 4.16x + 7.4984x= 12.6584x = 26780
x= 2115.59

= subtract 3% of her salary for 6 out of 12 months
26378.30 - (26378.30 * 2% * 10/12) = 26378.30 - 439.64 = 25938.66
= subtract 2% of her previously adjusted salary for 10 out of 12 months
salary at start of year was 25938.66
26780 - (26780 * 3% * 6/12) = 26780 - 401.7 = 26378.30
= subtract 3% of her salary for 6 out of 12 months
26378.30 - (26378.30 * 2% * 10/12) = 26378.30 - 439.64 = 25938.66

number by subtracting 2 from the above number and
adding 2 in front which will be....

Next, ask the person to write another five-digit number
below his original number. Suppose he writes 37589.
So you now have...

Now you write a five-digit number below it in such a
way that each digit is 9 minus digit above. You now have...

Ask the person to add one more 5-digit number. If he
adds 54732, you add below it 45267. Note that you decided
the number by subtracting each of his digit from 9.
Thus, you now have.....

Next, ask him to add all the number and he gets 257834
Show him the number which you had written as an answer
to this addition earlier in the folded paper and surprise him.

When it comes to word problems like this the biggest part of it can be seeing how to set it up. After that the math usually isn't hard. I hope your teacher is teaching how to see and set up this type of problem.
