Is there a rat trying to get in?!?

We used to have rats but we've killed them all. We live in an attached house so the neighbours might still have rats. For 2 nights in a row I've been hearing scratching on my wall (like the wall is being gnawed at) because my room is linked with the neighbours room. Can someone gice any suggestions of what the noise is?!
